Volunteer of the month - July 2009: Danny VanKoughnet

Danny has worked at Grace Haven as a volunteer for close to seven years. Danny shows up for work every Tuesday and Thursday. He works hard performing a variety of jobs and spending time with the seniors. Some of his regular jobs include mowing the lawn, raking leaves, garbage disposal, shredding paper, gardening, and sorting though supplies, and helping to organize boxes.
He loves to spend time with the seniors, appreciates their willingness to listen to what is important to him. He really loves reminiscing with the clients and has a lot of good memories of Dryden’s past.
Danny would like you to know that he loves wildlife and wilderness and enjoys sharing stories of years gone by. He was an avid trapper, wolf hunter, and a great gardener. He has grown fantastic corn over the years, and raised more than 20 mules, 6 horses (he can still remember all of their names).
Danny would like others to know that being a volunteer is a great thing to do. “You meet lots of people, set your own hours, have the right to shorten the day if needed, and feel like you are your own boss. I have learned lots from the seniors about the wars, farming and different countries.”
Thank you Danny! You are priceless.

August 2009 Volunteer Highlight

This month we are saying a BIG thank you to a couple of young volunteers.
Rya and Kyle have been spending parts of their summer days with us as eager volunteers to gain skills and experience with seniors.
What have they been doing you ask?
Check out this list of jobs:
  • Washing tables and setting up for lunch
  • Assisting with dish washing
  • Assisting with baking
  • Vacuuming
  • Dusting
  • Sweeping
  • Paper shredding
  • Assisting with raffle ticket sales
Rya and Kyle have proven that kids are very caring and hard working and love to make a difference. They always came with a willingness to work and were ready for their list of jobs on the days they could come out. When they weren’t working they enjoyed painting and playing cards with the clients.
    THANK YOU…….FROM ALL OF US.
